Shean Architects is a multidisciplinary architecture studio based in Ottawa’s Hintonburg neighbourhood.
Principal Rick Shean strives to bring the natural aesthetic into every project. His goal is to design unique homes that fit the needs and lifestyles of his clients. Rick creates beautiful, modern spaces that rely on use of the natural environment and manipulation of light.
We’re proud to have a wide range of award-winning large and small-scale projects in our portfolio. Our designs have also been featured in numerous publications and websites.
Our philosophy for what makes beautiful buildings centers around bringing natural elements into modern spaces. At the core of our design, we believe in making use of the natural environment and surrounding site, manipulation of natural light and space and use of texture and natural materials.
“People strive to make something interesting by having it stand out—but I would much rather have beauty. Done well, that natural aesthetic is sublime.”

Growing up in the theatre town of Stratford, Ontario laid the groundwork for Rick’s fascination with architecture, art and design.
Rick's interest in building began early in life with jobs pouring concrete and stone masonry. After earning his Bachelor of Architecture in 1998, he went on to combine his two passions: architecture and art, as a set designer for feature films and television.
A self-professed minimalist, Rick loves innovative architecture that focuses on the natural environment and light. He designed and built his own modern Ottawa home to reflect his family’s aesthetics and lifestyle.
Rick’s love of travel has led to design work in other corners of the world, including building schools and women’s shelters in India. He can also often be found riding around town on his motorcycle.
With 20+ years as an architect technologist, “J-P” has tremendous technical design experience in projects ranging from commercial and institutional to high-end residential projects. His specialized training provides highly detailed working drawings, CAD, 3D visualizations and digital architectural renderings.
A self-professed “geek”, if there is a new state-of-the-art technology – J-P knows about it, knows how to use it, and probably owns it. Because of this he has, by default, become the office “IT”guy. When not immersed in technology – J-P enjoys the great outdoors and wouldn’t miss his two annual camping trips.
